She had been expected for several days. This Saturday, November 23, the Vatican formalized the visit of Pope Francis to Corsica in a press release. A one-day trip, Sunday December 15, which will take place in Ajaccio.
“Responding to the invitation of the civil and ecclesiastical authorities of the country, Pope Francis will make an Apostolic trip to Ajaccio on December 15, on the occasion of the closing of the Congress 'Popular religiosity in the Mediterranean'”, writes the Holy See.
In a short video, published on the Papa Francescu in Corsica website, Cardinals François-Xavier Bustillo and Dominique Mamberti, originally from Vico, also spoke about “the very good news”.
Filmed in front of Saint Peter’s in Rome, Cardinal Bustillo declares: “We will give ourselves extraordinary means for an exceptional welcome to the Holy Father. We are counting on you, start to prepare, to bring together all the forces so that this moment, this day, remains in our memory and in our heritage from a cultural, spiritual, emotional point of view.”
The arrival of the Pope is a historic first for the island, marked by the Christian religion – 90% of the inhabitants declare themselves to be Catholic, according to the Church of Corsica – and with ancient links with the Vatican. For the moment, the details of registration for the Holy Mass organized outdoors at Casone have not yet been specified.
Confirmation of this visit was slow in coming. Scheduled for Thursday, it had been postponed so that diplomatic and administrative adjustments could be clarified, explained Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo. during a press conference organized at the diocese of Corsica.
“Everything is ready, we are ready, but we are part of a reality where dialogue is needed between two States, the Holy See and the Elysée“, he recalled. Cardinal Bustillo nevertheless welcomed a “good understanding“general between the State, the Collectivity of Corsica, the town hall of Ajaccio and the Vatican so that this trip can be organized in the best conditions.
