Trump's sentence suspended indefinitely after his presidential victory

Victory for the Trump clan. While his lawyers had officially called for a cancellation of the proceedings in the Stormy Daniels affair at the beginning of the week, Judge Juan Merchan, of the Manhattan Supreme Court, decided this Friday to indefinitely postpone the sentence of the 47th president of the UNITED STATES. An embarrassing affair that dates back to the period before his victory in his first presidential election.

The sentence, initially scheduled for last July, had already been postponed twice due to legal steps taken by Trump's team. Before the November election, his lawyers invoked presidential immunity to try to quash the charges. They also tried to move the case to federal court, arguing that New York jurisdiction was not appropriate. These steps led to several postponements, pushing Judge Merchan to postpone not only the sentence, but also the decision on the question of presidential immunity, until after the November 5 election.

A postponement or a cancellation?

If the judge announces a postponement for the moment, he also does not rule on the argument of presidential immunity put forward by Trump's lawyers. The re-elected president, however, got his lawyers to file a new request in order to simply have the case canceled.

In a letter to the judge, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg acknowledged that Trump was unlikely to be convicted before the end of his term. This Democrat, however, pleads for Trump's conviction to be upheld.

The end of a “witch hunt” for the Trump clan

A Trump spokesperson, Steven Cheung, commented on the decision, calling it a “decisive victory” for the president-elect: “The Manhattan case, which is a charade, is now fully stayed and sentencing is postponed. President Trump won a landslide victory, as the American people gave him a mandate to return to the presidency and end all vestiges of this witch hunt. » According to this same advisor, Donald Trump could now finally devote himself fully to his task of “making America great again” (Make America Great Again).
