COMMUNICATION – The “ vocals »: some cannot do without them and others hate them. For those who hate these voice messages, WhatsApp has designed a new feature – already present on other messaging services – which allows recorded words to be transcribed into text.

Because even if we have nothing against these messages, this possibility can be useful to many users, in particular people who are deaf or hard of hearing. “ Sometimes (…) you are traveling or in a noisy environment, or you receive a long voice message that you simply cannot listen to. For these moments, we are pleased to offer you transcriptions of voice messages », promises WhatsApp in a blog article published Thursday November 21 which presents this functionality.

Tested for several months, it will be available to everyone in the “weeks to come” and can be activated from the application settings, by pressing « discussions » Then “transcribe voice messages”. It will then be possible to select the “ target language ».

Currently, the feature is only available in English, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese on Android. On iOS, more languages are accessible, including French, German, Japanese and Korean. Once the option is activated, simply long press on a voice message and select “transcribe”. WhatsApp promises to add new languages in the coming months.

Transcriptions are processed directly on the device, so the content remains end-to-end encrypted and is not uploaded to WhatsApp's servers or those of your smartphone manufacturer.
