Hydrogen: a cornerstone for a sustainable future
Hydrogen represents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in the future energy supply and is thus seen as an essential factor in achieving climate goals. It not only offers an efficient means of storage and seasonal transportation of renewable energy, but can also be produced by electrolysis in an environmentally friendly manner through the use of excess renewable electricity.
Globally, green hydrogen is primarily intended for use where other decarbonization measures are difficult or impossible to implement, such as in fertilizer or steel production.
Additionally, hydrogen facilitates emission-free mobility, exemplified by its application in fuel cell vehicles, thereby reducing emissions and enhancing energy security. This highlights the crucial role of hydrogen in the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
Luxembourg’s hydrogen ambitions
Paul Wurth Geprolux engineers have been intensively engaged in the field of hydrogen for many years. In addition to technical expertise in the integration of technologies for water treatment, electrolysis, compression, as well as hydrogen storage and transport, all projects are subject to a detailed economic analysis , including additional recovery potentials such as oxygen or heat.
Thus, in 2022, Paul Wurth Geprolux, with the support of the Ministry of the Economy, launched and conducted a feasibility study which laid the foundations for the ambitious project aiming to produce green hydrogen for local consumption, in line with Luxembourg’s hydrogen strategy.
Luxembourg’s hydrogen strategy
Luxembourg’s hydrogen strategy published in 2021 is not limited to local hydrogen production, but also looks well beyond its borders. A notable example in this context is the Republic of Cape Verde, where favorable conditions for renewable electricity production exist, potentially enabling profitable production of green hydrogen for local consumption and for export. Here, Paul Wurth Geprolux was able to support the Luxembourg Development Agency in carrying out a feasibility study highlighting the production of green hydrogen in Cape Verde.
These projects, both in Luxembourg and internationally, highlight the transformative potential of hydrogen. It will be interesting to follow the development of all these initiatives and explore new opportunities for increased decarbonization.
