Microsoft's tiny PC for accessing Windows in the cloud

Microsoft is launching a new computer and surprise, it's a desktop model that has nothing to do with the Surface range. Windows 365 Cloud Link is a thin client that looks like a Mac mini which provides quick and secure access to a “real” PC in the cloud.

Launched in 2021, Windows 365 is a PC in the cloud, accessible from any device — smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop, it doesn't matter as long as it's connected to the internet. The subscription formula is aimed at businesses and professionals, with obviously some success.

A desktop PC for those “without a fixed desk”

This is why Microsoft today presents a mini PC designed to connect to Windows 365. The aptly named Windows 365 Link, which resembles an NUC or a Mac mini, will be particularly useful in companies with shared workspaces, where employees are without a fixed desk.

The case was deliberately designed to be minimalist: it is in fact “ maximize productivity “. In fact, startup is intended to be very fast, responsiveness flawless, and security to a maximum with updates that are downloaded automatically and installed at night.

The device supports up to two 4K monitors, it integrates four USB-C ports, an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Under the small hood nestles an Intel chip, 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The Link does not work under Windows 11 – that is not the goal – but under a simplified version of the OS called Windows CPC. It does not include any local applications, nor any user session system. Everything goes through the Windows 365 connection window.

Microsoft is attacking a niche market here, that of thin clients where Dell and HP reign supreme. The Link will be sold as a “preview program” for $349 in a handful of countries, including the US, Canada, UK and Germany. A global launch is planned for next April.
