For Ignazio Cassis, it’s a meeting like so many others. This Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs met his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanar. On the menu of their discussions, “bilateral relations, Switzerland’s European policy as well as the geopolitical situation, in particular the war in Ukraine”. And then, “with regard to the conflict in the Middle East, both Switzerland and Slovakia have stressed that dialogue, respect for international law and de-escalation are essential to put an end to hostilities”.
The official press release did not believe it said so well. The bloody war between Israel and the Islamist movements Hamas and Hezbollah, in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, continues to create emotions, indignation and protests. And both Ignazio Cassis and his Slovak host saw this to their cost – without serious consequences. In fact, the public discussion that they were to have at the University of Friborg was simply canceled at the injunction of the federal authorities, La Liberté and Nau tell us.
