Domestic violence: 400 victims supported in Lausanne

The Lausanne Municipal Police recorded 363 cases of domestic violence in 2023. Among these, a feminicide is to be deplored, the first since 2017. The “street harassment” platform has recorded 921 reports since its creation in 2019 .

In total, the 363 domestic violence cases represented 737 offenses. “On average, there are 2.03 offenses per case. This is a stable rate compared to previous years,” said Albane Bruigom, head of the Special Unit for Victim Support, on Tuesday during the presentation. to the media of the 2024 report on domestic violence and harassment in public spaces.

Domestic violence gave rise to 53 eviction measures from the home in 2023, compared to 49 in 2022. The percentage of cases resulting in eviction was 17.3% in 2023 compared to 14.2% the previous year. “Eviction is not always possible, because the people in question do not necessarily share the same home,” noted Ms. Bruigom.

80% of victims are women

No less than 408 victims of domestic violence and disputes within the couple were monitored by the Albane Bruigom unit between June 2023 and October 2024. In 82% of cases, these were ‘a woman. Around 25% of them benefited from a second follow-up.

“This work of monitoring victims is almost a particularity of Lausanne. We want to ensure that the person goes to the right organizations and that they are not forgotten in the procedures,” underlined the Police Commander. municipal council of Lausanne, Olivier Botteron.

Harassment: more than 90% men

Some 921 cases of street harassment were reported on the dedicated platform between November 2019 and October 2024. The victim made the report themselves in more than three quarters of cases (704), while a witness walked away. charged in 175 cases. Nearly half of the reports came from people between 21 and 30 years old. The 11-20 year old age group made almost 20% of the reports, in equal shares with that of the 31-40 year olds.

Of the 794 victims of street harassment, 576 were women, 77 were men, and 36 identified as trans, queer or questioning. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the perpetrators were single men (552) or a group of men (289 cases).

The 921 reports reported a total of 1747 acts. “Insisting stares” came up most frequently (403), followed by “sexual/sexist remarks/insults” (345), and being followed (254). The majority of incidents reported took place in the street (566) or on public transport (171).

Space for victims moved

A prevention campaign against harassment in public spaces took place during the summer of 2024. It will be continued in the spring of 2025. “These campaigns have a direct impact on reporting,” declared Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand, municipal officer in charge. of security and the economy, also present on Tuesday.

Note also that since the beginning of November, the space dedicated to welcoming victims has been moved from the south of the city to the city center. “It is a neutral and friendly place, in the heart of a living space, not marked by the police and accessible to people with reduced mobility,” noted Olivier Botteron.
