A study commissioned by La France insoumise (LFI) and carried out by Toluna-Harris Interactive between October 25 and 28, 2024 reveals an unusual consensus around ambitious social and energy proposals. The survey, conducted among 1,018 French people representative of the population, shows broad support for several measures, beyond political divisions.
Nearly 87% of respondents approve of the idea of setting electricity prices based on production costs, rather than following market fluctuations. Similarly, there is unanimous support for blocking the prices of energy products, in mainland France (86%) and overseas (70%). As a reminder, several overseas territories are facing demonstrations and blockades, due to the high prices of basic necessities.
Social issues are also at the heart of priorities. A law aimed at better recognizing the arduousness of so-called “feminized” professions (such as care, education or disability) receives 85% favorable opinions. Furthermore, the temporary regularization of health practitioners from countries outside the European Union, to compensate for shortages in medical structures, obtains the approval of 79% of respondents.
Institutional measures, such as the creation of a citizen-initiated referendum allowing the recall of elected officials, appeal to 78% of French people, with marked support among supporters of LFI (93%), but also among those of the National Rally ( 85%). As for the repeal of the extension of the legal retirement age to 64, 71% of respondents said they were in favor, although this figure is down slightly compared to last year (74%). As a reminder, a reform adopted by article 49.3 of the French Constitution in 2023 postponed the legal retirement age from 62 to 64 years.
However, certain proposals are more divisive. For example, 66% of French people approve of a ten-year moratorium on motorway projects, an idea supported mainly by left-wing sympathizers. On the other hand, the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, which provides for the importation of South American agricultural products, is rejected by 52% of participants, while 15% do not comment.
Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced on Tuesday that he would propose a debate in Parliament followed by a vote on the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Latin American countries of Mercosur, while farmers continue their mobilization throughout France, particularly against this draft agreement.
