The comments of UDC MP Andreas Glarner concerning Islam on social networks are not protected by immunity from justice. It is not justified to grant him preferential treatment, according to the competent National committee.
The Immunity Committee of the National Council has not considered the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Canton of Bern to lift immunity in order to be able to carry out criminal proceedings against Andreas Glarner for suspicion of discrimination and incitement to hatred. She made her decision by 5 votes to 4, said a press release from Parliament services on Monday.
The Aargauian had posted a message on social networks accompanied by the hashtag ‘#stoppislam’. For the committee, the comments of the national advisor are formulated too generally for it to be possible to establish a link with certain parliamentary objects or to deduce concrete legislative measures. The Legal Affairs Committee of the Council of States will still have to make a decision.
Decision suspended
The committee suspended its decision on the request to lift the immunity of two other UDC national councilors, group leader Thomas Aeschi (ZG) and Michael Graber (VS). Mr. Aeschi and his party colleague were energetically repulsed by armed men from the federal police on the sidelines of the visit of the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament. The two elected officials did not want to respect a security cordon.
By 6 votes to 2 and one abstention, the committee prefers to wait for an opinion from the Administrative Delegation of Parliament on the matter.
