In June 2022, Swiss customs officers intercepted a vehicle registered in Valais in Perly carrying twelve undeclared bottles of grands crus, with a value exceeding 100,000 francs.
The driver, a 63-year-old Spaniard, and his passenger, a 53-year-old Swiss man, had chosen this unguarded customs post to discreetly enter Switzerland. “The passenger indicated that the bottles of wine belonged to him and that he intended to clear them the next day at the Martigny customs (VS),” reports the press release.Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (OFDF).
The investigation revealed that the passenger had hired the driver to drive him to France to collect cases of wine from the premises of a French company. On their return, the duo headed to Geneva. But just before arriving at Bardonnex customs, the passenger asked the driver to exit the highway and enter Switzerland via Perly.
By hiring and paying the driver for this transport, the owner of the bottles committed an infringement of the customs law and the VAT law. In addition to the royalties due, the protagonists in this affair will have to pay fines of up to several thousand francs each, adds the OFDF.
