Ahmed Laaouej (PS) keeps his seat as deputy and resigns as mayor of Koekelberg: Olivia P’Tito will be mayor

Absolute majority for Ahmed Laaouej in Koekelberg

Director of Brussels Training

The mayorship goes to the second on the list: Olivia P’Tito will be proposed as mayor of Koekelberg. In October, however, she obtained the 7th score on the socialist list with 409 votes, against 2,882 for Ahmed Laaouej. The socialist, who was a Brussels MP between 2004 and 2013, is currently director general of Bruxelles Formation.

Ahmed Laaouej will, however, remain a municipal councilor and will even chair the local assembly. Without wanting to eliminate the concept of decumulation, the Brussels PS wanted, in this month of November, to return to a modality by providing a prevention mechanism for mayors and aldermen elected as deputies. A mechanism allowing them to avoid committing an irreversible act and to regain their local mandate if they were to leave the parliamentary chamber. The socialist text received a cold reception from other parties and was therefore unsuccessful.

Earlier this week, David Leisterh (MR) announced he was making the opposite choice: renouncing the mandate of deputy to become mayor of Watermael-Boitsfort. A position that he will be able to leave, temporarily, by becoming “unable mayor” if he were to become – as is probable – the future minister-president.
