“The Mountain Man” almost collapsed: a sober but classy speech from Shea Weber

Shea Weber was true to himself on Saturday evening when his name was officially added to the Montreal Canadiens’ ring of honor during a ceremony at the Bell Centre, on the sidelines of a clash with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Saturday evening.

Warmly applauded, the former CH captain delivered a sober, but classy speech in the center of the ice rink.

“Good evening Montreal,” he began. “It’s good to be back. It was an honor for me to play with the Canadiens and an even greater honor to be captain of this team.

“Walking in the footsteps of the legendary Maurice Richard, Jean Béliveau and Yvan Cournoyer is something I never took for granted.”

“I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to play in front of you at the Bell Centre. Thank you so much.”

It would have been a feat to draw tears from the man nicknamed “the mountain man”, but the colossus seemed moved when Serge Savard revealed his name and number on the walls of the amphitheater.
