The PQ leader once again denounced the controversial remarks of Solidaire MP Haroun Bouazzi on alleged racism in the National Assembly, but also attacked Québec Solidaire more broadly.
“Québec solidaire often engages in a lot of negative politics by making attempts at intent which [ne] have nothing to do with the facts,” railed Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon, on the sidelines of a citizens’ assembly in Victoriaville where his party is holding its national council on Sunday. “Secularism, racist. Jean François Lisée, racist. The CAQ, racist. Allusions to the far right […] “, he cited as an example.
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon also accused Ruba Ghazal of having written on Facebook that he “wanted to control women’s fertility” after the PQ leader claimed that massive immigration and its effects on housing and daycare places can harm birth rates.
The one who will be crowned on Saturday as the party’s female spokesperson had indicated on the social network in October that “women do not need a politician to tell them why they choose to have a child or not . And certainly not to tell them, once again, that it’s immigration’s fault.”
“It’s so dishonest and it’s a recurring process of Québec solidaire. Inventing remarks to signal one’s virtue on false bases, but also […] attempt to make unfrequentable [ses adversaires]. It no longer works in Quebec,” replied the PQ leader on Saturday.
Regarding the case of Mr. Bouazzi, who directly targeted the Parti Québécois and the Legault government by accusing them of presenting the “Other” as someone dangerous or inferior, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is opinion that the MP must “retract and apologize” otherwise Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and Mme Ghazal must expel him from the solidarity caucus.
“Quebec Solidaire is faced with two choices: either, again, it tolerates, because you will find dozens of examples of Haroun Bouazzi who treats everyone as racist for no acceptable reason […] so Québec solidaire endorses or Québec solidaire draws a line,” said the leader of the Parti Québécois. According to him, the situation is “unacceptable” and Mr. Bouazzi’s comments are defamatory.
At a conference in Montreal, Ruba Ghazal and Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois said on Saturday that discussions were continuing in caucus on the case of Mr. Bouazzi. Thursday, Mme Ghazal called Mr. Bouazzi to order for comments that she considers “frankly clumsy and exaggerated”.
However, he gave an interview on Friday to Tout un matin where he reaffirmed his remarks.
