Switzerland leads 1-0 in the Billie Jean King Cup play-off against Serbia. Belinda Bencic (WTA 913) brought the first point to the Swiss by beating Lola Radivojevic (WTA 181) in straight sets (6-2 6-2) on Friday in Bienne.
Two years and two days after bringing a world champion title to Switzerland, Belinda Bencic celebrated her return to the Swiss jersey with a success that brooks no discussion. The young mother should not wait very long before regaining her place among the best players on the circuit.
Belinda Bencic only needed a few games to adjust her serve, while she chained points on the faceoff of her 19-year-old opponent. She also made no unforced errors during a first set easily won 6-2. In the second set, the 27-year-old Saint Galloise managed three additional breaks to win in 1 hour 19 minutes of play.
Golubic’s turn
The second singles scheduled for Friday will pit Viktorija Golubic (WTA 108) against Mia Ristic (WTA 394). In the event of success in this jump-off (the first team with three points wins), Switzerland would obtain the right to compete in the qualifications for the final phase of the next edition, in the spring.
