“Marshal Fany Claudin was fatally injured in a road accident that occurred during an operational mission to escort a logistical convoy (…) in Lebanon,” announced the General Staff of the Armed Forces on Friday, November 15, in a press release. The soldier, engaged in the 121st train regiment, had been deployed in Lebanon since the beginning of November within UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).
“Bowting with deep sadness before the memory of this soldier who died in action while carrying out his mission, Army General Thierry Burkhard, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, joins in the pain of his family”we can read in the press release.
Tensions have increased in recent weeks between Israel and UNIFIL. The UN Security Council recently condemned attacks in recent weeks against the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, calling for “all parts” to respect the security of the peacekeepers. In a statement, Council members condemned several attacks targeting UNIFIL positions and injuring several peacekeepers.
