“I have been there for a period of time that I do not know. Do I need to remind you that I did not roll on the ground to be Prime Minister?” Invited at the closing of the meetings of the Départements de France association, Friday November 15, Michel Barnier did not just detail a whole series of measures to respond to the discontent of local elected officials in the face of the planned budget cuts. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to deliver a very political message while the National Assembly recently rejected the first part of the finance bill.

“I was not asking and I agreed to serve as you serve, Mr. Presidents, and to use everything I learned for our country”continued the head of government. He also clearly warned against those who would be tempted to vote for a motion of censure. “I'm ready to leave tomorrow morning too. You need to know that”he insisted.

Michel Barnier also openly raised the question of the future presidential election, to quickly dismiss it. “I don't have an agenda for after that. I'm 73 today, I'll be 76 in 2027: I don't need to be reminded of my age. I know what's reasonable and what would not be reasonable”, he assured, sparking laughter in the room. The Prime Minister said he had no “no other ambition” than that of moving his country forward.
