The deep-layer radioactive waste repository project in Stadel (ZH) must go before the Swiss people. The ‘Nuclear Deep Discharge in Front of the People!’ Commission believes that the population has a say in a project of this magnitude.
The National Cooperative Society for the Storage of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) will submit its request for authorization for the construction of the repository to the Confederation next Tuesday. The Federal Council and Parliament must decide on its fate from 2029. The project will be subject to an optional referendum.
‘We will do everything so that the Swiss people can express themselves at the ballot box,’ the commission said in a press release on Friday. ‘A decision that will have a million-year impact on the environment must absolutely be submitted to a popular vote.’
And to estimate that such a deposit is ‘a danger for future generations, both for people and for the environment’. She criticizes the lack of a ‘plan B’ in the event of problems and asks for alternatives.
