The real weapon against crazy drivers: the radar car could soon arrive in Belgium!

The concept? The vehicle, sometimes driven by plainclothes police officers, sometimes by employees of private companies authorized by the State, circulates on highways and national highways, obviously respecting the speed.

Speedgun, binoculars, drones…: these new radars used abroad and which could arrive here

Cameras installed on the rear window (the glass is often tinted to hide the device) as well as at the front of the vehicle, communicate information to an on-board computer which calculates the difference in speed between the radar car and that of the vehicle. the motorist who overtakes her. If the radar car is traveling at 122 km/h on the highway (130 max) and the car overtaking it does so with a gap of 30 km/h, this means that it was traveling at 152 km/h. An infrared radar will take a photo and a letter stamped with the national police seal will end up in the offender’s mailbox.

The technical margin is, however, higher than other radars: 10 km/h for the radar car below 100 km/h and 10% beyond, compared to 5 km/h or 5% for other radars (6 km/h or 6% in Belgium). “Thus, vehicles traveling from 146 km/h on a motorway, 124 km/h on an expressway or 61 km/h in built-up areas will be flashed,” explains the French Ministry of the Interior.

In total, more than 400 radar cars are already in operation in , and 126 new ones will therefore be put into service next year: these are Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, Renault Mégane, Skoda Octavia and even of VW Passat. From now on, a Citroën C5 Air-Cross will be added to this repressive arsenal.

In Belgium, radar cars are not yet on the road, in particular because of the higher price than a classic mobile radar. This could change: contacted, the Walloon Minister of Road Safety reserves his response for the next general meeting of road safety, which must be held in 2025.
