Since the advent of the new regime, the Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs (MCTN) has engaged in a process of cleaning up the press sector. Various actions have been carried out in this direction, in particular the establishment of a media declaration platform on August 16.
With this in mind, an interministerial commission was set up, including the ministries of Justice, the Interior and Labor. This structure also includes representatives of the National Press Card Commission and Cored, in order to facilitate the procedures for verifying media compliance with the legislation in force.
Thus, in six months, strong measures have been taken in favor of transparency and restructuring in the sector. Today, following the first meeting of the commission for validating the declarations of press companies, the official list of media compliant with the applicable legal regimes will be published no later than November 30, 2024, according to a joint press release from the ministry of guardianship and Cored.
It is also specified that “this publication will be immediately followed by formal notice to the media that do not comply with the regulations and, in the event of non-compliance with the legislation in force, the latter will be suspended and will be exposed to the sanctions provided for by the law. »
Furthermore, questioned in recent days about the media restructuring process following the incidents observed during the electoral campaign, incidents reported by various press organs, the two entities wished to provide some details.
“We would like, through this joint declaration with Cored, to recall the essential role of the media in pacifying the political space and promoting social cohesion, by avoiding broadcasting speeches likely to incite violence,” can we read in the note.
“In fact, it was noted, recently and before these incidents, multiple calls for violence relayed by traditional and online media. These facts remind us of the urgency of continuing the process of restructuring the media sector to promote ethical and responsible journalism,” add the signatories.
