(Agence Ecofin) – Morocco officially unveiled its ICT development strategy in September 2024. The country aims to transform itself into a regional and international digital hub by 2030.
The country is intensifying its international cooperation efforts for the implementation of its new digital transformation strategy, “Digital Morocco 2030”, officially launched last September. At the start of the week, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni (photo, left), Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, spoke with Alberto Rodrigues da Silva (photo, right), Portuguese Secretary of State in charge of Modernization and Digitization, in order to strengthen partnerships in the digital sector. Similar discussions had already begun in October with Estonia.
Discussions with Mr. da Silva focused in particular on strengthening cooperation and coordination in the areas of digital technology, information technologies, and the digitalization of public administration. During discussions with Estonia, particular emphasis was placed on the development of e-government and digital governance.
It should be remembered that Estonia is considered one of the most advanced countries in the world in terms of digital transformation. The United Nations (UN) ranks the Baltic country second in the world on the e-Government Development Index (EGDI), with a score of 0.9727 out of 1. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU ) also sees Estonia as one of the models to follow in terms of cybersecurity according to the “Global Cybersecurity Index 2024”. When it comes to ICT development, Estonia scores 97.9 out of 100 (ITU).
For its part, Portugal is ranked 49th in the world according to the EGDI with a score of 0.7878 out of 1. It is also a model to follow in terms of cybersecurity, particularly with regard to technical, organizational, legislative and security measures. cooperation. For the ITU ICT Development Index, the country scores 87.4 out of 100.
Support from Portugal and Estonia, as well as other countries, should support the ambition of the authorities to “make Morocco a social hub to accelerate the social and economic development of the Kingdom” by 2030. The government is counting on a contribution from the digital sector of 100 billion Moroccan dirhams ($10 billion) in 2030.
