As the legislative elections approach this Sunday, November 17 in Senegal, the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security has decided to temporarily restrict movement between regions of the country.
A decree has been published to this effect, reports the African Press Agency (APA).
The decree signed by Minister Jean Baptiste Tine indicates that “for security reasons, the movement of vehicles from region to region is prohibited on Sunday November 17, 2024 at midnight”. This exceptional measure does not, however, concern “vehicles of the defense and security forces”, indicates the same media.
As an exception, the text provides that “special authorizations may be issued by the Minister of the Interior and Public Security and the regional governors”. Any breach of this decree will be “punished with the penalties provided for by the laws and regulations in force”, specifies the same source.
The Director General of the National Police, the High Commander of the National Gendarmerie and the Director of Military Justice, as well as the regional governors, are responsible for ensuring the application of this decision, specifies the APA.
The Senegalese are preparing to vote this Sunday, November 17 to choose the 165 deputies of the 15th legislature, recalls the African media emphasizing that these early legislative elections take place after the dissolution of the National Assembly last September by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, elected in March 2024.
Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane called on his supporters for calm after inviting them to “take revenge” for the violence committed against his activists by supporters of Barthélémy Dias, the mayor of Dakar.
Head of the Pastef party list in the legislative elections and head of government since April, Ousmane Sonko had reported, on his Facebook account, attacks suffered by his camp in Dakar, Saint-Louis (North) and Koungueul (Center). He attributed them to supporters of the mayor of Dakar, Barthélémy Dias, who leads a competing coalition vying for the legislative elections, recalls “Jeune Afrique”.
