Minister Glatigny (MR) will ban the use of the midpoint in schools

Eleader of inclusive writing, the use of the midpoint will be prohibited in schools in Wallonia and Brussels in order not to harm the learning of French and reading, announced Wednesday the Minister of Education, Valérie Glatigny (MR).

“My long-term objective is to prohibit inclusive writing via the midpoint,” said the minister on Wednesday in a plenary session of Parliament in response to a topical question from MP Valérie Warzée-Caverenne (MR).

The midpoint, also called the middle point, has been used by some for several years with a view to more inclusive writing. According to its supporters, it allows certain terms to be written in a more egalitarian manner between genders. Note that the midpoint is not the only way to do inclusive writing, the feminization of words is also a way to do inclusive writing.

According to these detractors, this typographic sign, however, disrupts reading as well as the learning of grammatical rules, particularly among young people.

If she intends to prohibit any use of the midpoint at school, Ms. Glatigny nevertheless confirmed on Wednesday that she wants to retain the decree framework approved during the previous legislature which provides for the feminization in FWB of a whole series of names, functions and professions.

While supporting this feminization, MR and Engagés had announced in their majority agreement published last summer that they wanted to abandon the use of inclusive writing in all texts and communications to those administered in favor of “a language understandable by all and respectful of the rules. »

The formal ban on the midpoint in schools in Wallonia and Brussels had not been mentioned at that time.
