Akhannouch highlights Moroccan experience in climate adaptation

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, who represents King Mohammed VI at the high-level segment of Heads of State and Government, held within the framework of COP29, highlighted, Wednesday in Baku, the experience of the Kingdom in terms of adaptation to climate change.

Under the enlightened leadership of the King, Morocco has been committed for many years to playing a major role in the energy transition, both at the national, international and continental levels, said Akhannouch who spoke during this Segment.

In accordance with the Sovereign’s enlightened vision, renewable energies in Morocco today represent around 40% of electricity production capacity, a figure which will be increased to 52% before 2030, he said.

He also recalled the launch of the Initiative for the Adaptation of African Agriculture (Triple A) under the leadership of the King during COP22, held in 2016 in Marrakech.

This initiative carries “a bold vision: transforming African agriculture and protecting the environment, to face climate change,” said the Head of Government, who congratulated Azerbaijan for organizing the COP29 and for its constant commitment throughout the preparation of this major event.

In close collaboration with the African Adaptation Initiative, the Triple A Initiative continues its action on three main axes, namely improving soil management, increased access to water for irrigation and integration of resilient agricultural technologies, explained Akhannouch.

Also, Morocco has already started updating its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), by increasing its decarbonization ambitions and integrating new structuring projects, in particular the desalination of seawater via the renewable energy, the valorization of biomass as well as green hydrogen, he continued.

With some of the most competitive solar and wind resources, as well as recognized experience in attracting investors, Morocco intends to play an important role in responding to the major challenges of carbon neutrality, he stressed.

“Morocco fully assumes its responsibilities. However, these challenges concern every nation on the planet, in particular the most industrialized countries,” said the Head of Government.

Natural disasters due to global warming, which are becoming more frequent and intense, generate considerable human and economic losses and affect food security, health infrastructure and access to drinking water, he deplored. The world expects concrete commitments from COP29 to accelerate the ecological transition and provide in a united manner the means necessary for its implementation, in particular sustainable financing solutions for adaptation funds and climate insurance mechanisms, to enable the most vulnerable countries, often the least responsible for historic emissions, to strengthen their resilience, concluded Akhannouch.

The Head of Government, who chairs the Moroccan delegation participating in COP29 in Azerbaijan, was welcomed Tuesday in Baku by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.

COP 29 (November 11-22) focuses primarily on climate financing, given the need to enable all countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect lives and resources. livelihoods against the worsening effects of climate change, particularly for vulnerable communities.
