All the Valais parties are having “difficulty bringing out personalities who stand out from the crowd” in view of the government election next March.
-
This reality, coupled with the constantly declining influence of elected officials in Bern and a lack of replacements, highlights a reality: the golden age of Valais politics is coming to an end.
-
If in the past, Valais set the tone for federal politics, with presidents of national parties, now it is no longer a heavyweight at the Swiss level.
The observation is made without concession. “There are people in Valais who don’t know who Roberto Schmidt or Frédéric Favre are if they pass them in the street.” Carried out by a former cantonal party president, the analysis is not kind to the two state councilors who are not standing for re-election after two terms. But it highlights the reality of Valais politics: its golden age is coming to an end. And this is materialized in particular in the personalities who are emerging to run for a place in the Valais government next March.
Last Thursday, the PLR announced the names of people interested in the position of State Councilor. There are two of them: Sonia Tauss-Cornut, group leader in the cantonal parliament, and Stéphane Ganzer, deputy and president of the commune of Noble-Contrée. On the side of the Haut-Valais Center, which must also find a foal, the name of Franziska Biner, deputy, elected this Sunday vice-president of the municipality of Zermatt and president of the party, is circulating with insistence. Although they are certainly known at the regional level, these political figures have a notoriety that hardly extends beyond the borders of their district.
