According to experts, the detection of the H5N1 virus in a teenager from British Columbia, if his infection is confirmed, would be a first in Canada and would remain, for the moment, a very rare case. (Archive photo) PHOTO : iStock
Avian flu was allegedly contracted by a teenager in the Fraser Valley, a first in humans. This was announced by British Columbia health authorities this weekend. If the infection is confirmed, it would be the first time that the H5N1 virus has been contracted by a human being in Canada. Dr. Brian Conway, medical director of the Francophone Community Health Center Santé Ouest, discusses the situation.
We evaluated a preliminary sample here in British Columbia and we sent that sample that was potentially positive, that had demonstrated signs of H5N1, to the National Public Health Laboratory in Winnipeg for confirmation. It is important to understand how this is transmitted and to put in place the necessary public health measures.
explains Dr. Brian Conway.
