Who should remain responsible for changing public transport fares? In the current situation, each adaptation of the tariff scale requires the adoption of a law by parliament, which is subject to an optional referendum. However, a majority of deputies chose to relinquish this competence and transfer it to public management as well as to the Council of State. A bill to this effect was passed in May 2024, by the UDC, the PLR, The Center, as well as Liberties and Social Justice. This modification is also supported by the government. Conversely, it is contested by the left, the MCG and the unions, who have gathered nearly 8,000 initials to submit a referendum on which the population will vote on November 24.
More autonomy and flexibility
