Lawyers suspend strike after agreement with Justice Ministry

End of the crisis between the presidents of the bar and the Ministry of Justice. As expected, the ABM published a press release late Monday night, announcing the results of discussions with the supervisory ministry as well as the decision to suspend the general strike that began on November 1.

According to the press release published by the Association, this decision was taken following a series of meetings, the last of which was held today at the ministry’s headquarters. This meeting made it possible to establish a structured dialogue, in particular through the creation of thematic commissions to deal with the various pending files according to a defined timetable, starting from November 15, 2024.

During the meeting, representatives of lawyers, led by the president of the Association, Me Hussein El Zyani, presented a file of demands encompassing reforms of the Code of Civil Procedure, the Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as the implementation up to date with the law on the legal profession and files relating to taxation, the digitalization of legal procedures and social protection through the mutuality of lawyers.

For its part, the Ministry of Justice, represented by its Secretary General, welcomed the seriousness of the discussions and submitted the draft laws to the Association, emphasizing its commitment to continuing the reforms necessary to modernize the judicial system. A detailed report of the discussions was signed by both parties, marking a key step in this dialogue.

The Association subsequently held an open session to define the next actions to be undertaken while ensuring that the momentum of mobilization around professional objectives was maintained. Announcing its decision to end the general strike of lawyers, the ABM office expressed its satisfaction with the commitments made by the Ministry of Justice and highlighted the importance of continuing to work collectively to defend the achievements of the profession.

This outcome marks a significant step forward in the consolidation of the role of lawyers within the Moroccan judicial system and in the defense of their professional interests. The Association called on its members to remain vigilant and mobilized to guarantee the application of the agreements and continue to play an active role in strengthening the rule of law in Morocco.
