The canton and the City of Geneva, in partnership with various associations, are launching a new awareness campaign aimed at putting an end to the scourge of sexist and sexual violence. This campaign runs throughout the canton until November 30.
The campaign, entitled “Sexist and sexual violence: let’s put an end to it!”, results in posters in the streets, shopping centers, post offices, public transport and several schools. It also includes exhibitions, meetings, conferences, round tables and workshops, the canton and the City of Geneva indicated on Monday.
Collective responsibility
These campaigns are “a way of feeling recognized and legitimized in the paths and experiences that are lived”, presents Héloïse Roman, “equality” project manager for the City of Geneva, in Monday’s 12:30 p.m. She explains that she often receives positive feedback from people who say they are touched by having these messages in the public space.
This year, particular emphasis is placed on collective responsibility in the face of gender-based and sexual violence, by raising awareness among the general public and inviting them to get involved in the fight. Slogans like “You are witnesses” legitimize the action of people who witness this violence, encouraging them to denounce it.
“There is still a long way to go” in raising awareness of this violence among the population, adds Héloïse Roman, although “we talk about it more”.
“Promote equality”
In the canton of Geneva, 80% of major victims of gender-based and sexual violence, who were supported last year by the Geneva support network, were women. Sexual violence mainly takes place within the family or within couples.
“Fighting against violence means promoting equality all year round and at all levels: at home, at school, in the political sphere, in the professional world and even in public spaces,” said the President of the Council of State Nathalie Fontanet, quoted in the press release.
This awareness campaign is part of the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based and Sexual Violence which takes place on November 25.
