Massive flooding in Beirut threatens access to Lebanese airport

On Sunday, devastating floods hit Beirut and surrounding areas due to heavy rains, causing the closure of a main road leading to Rafic Hariri International Airport. Lebanon’s capital was hit hard, with floods engulfing several roads, including the airport tunnel.

Firefighting teams were mobilized to rescue people stranded in their vehicles in the locality of Khaldeh, located south of Beirut. The official Lebanese news agency ANI confirmed these relief operations.

In the Baabda region, civil defense personnel managed to free a car and rescue the occupants, trapped by accumulating water shortly after torrential rains, MTV reported. Furthermore, the Sanayeh district of Beirut suffered significant flooding which affected several homes, according to an Anadolu correspondent.

Ali Hamieh, Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport, told X that government teams were working to remove stagnant water under the Khaldeh Bridge, as well as cleaning storm drains.

Lebanon’s meteorological department reported intense rainfall accompanied by strong winds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, with temperatures ranging from 13°C at night to 23°C during the day. Alongside these bad weather, Lebanon is facing the difficulties caused by Israeli aggression which has so far caused 3,189 deaths and injured 14,078 people, including a majority of women and children.

According to official Lebanese statistics, around 1.4 million people have been displaced since September 23, a direct consequence of tensions with Israel.
