Large black smoke at rue Le Corbusier, in the Champel district, Monday morning. Dispatched to the site at 8:49 a.m., the Geneva Fire and Rescue Service (SIS) noted a strong clearance from the entrance to an underground car park. Two vehicles were completely on fire in the 2nd basement, indicates Captain Nicolas Millot, spokesperson for the SIS, in a press release.
The fire was brought under control at 11 a.m. using two hoses. A person, bothered by the smoke, was taken by ambulance to the University Hospitals of Geneva. The smoke caused damage to vehicles parked on both levels of the car park.
A long smoke extraction operation followed. It mobilized no less than seven powerful turbo-fans. One of them was mounted on one of the new SIS robots, for which it was the very first intervention.
The apartments in the thirteen-story building were not too affected. In total, 25 professional firefighters, seven vehicles, two ambulances, and the cantonal and municipal police were mobilized. The intervention ended at 2:05 p.m.
