This initiative was created due to a glaring labor shortage in the construction field in Quebec.

According to data from the Quebec Construction Association (ACQ) obtained by TVA Nouvelles, 17,000 workers each year will be missing until 2028.

In the Capitale-Nationale region, this year, companies are looking for another 2,500 workers in the various construction trades.

Approximately 20% of participants in the relief camp continue their training in order to find employment in the construction world, according to the ACQ’s director of public and government affairs, Félix Rhéaume.

“The people who come here just to try for a weekend, there are 20% who continue their training and who will join the construction industry full time,” said Mr. Rhéaume.

“It was fun”

Marie-Josée, who is one of the camp participants this year, aims to create her own business.

“It was a really great opportunity to be able to learn more about tasks like pulling joints and using plaster. It was a day, I thought it was fun. It really improves my knowledge, the chance to practice and learn lots of tricks of the trade,” she explained to TVA Nouvelles.

Present during the next generation camp in Quebec, the Minister of Labor, Jean Boulet, recalled the importance of training new workers in construction.

“As you know, we adopted a law last May. We want versatility, mobility, access as well as better representation of women and people from visible minorities.

However, the senior ACQ official believes that the labor shortage will not be resolved quickly.

“The labor crisis is not going to go away immediately. But yes, we see an impact,” indicated Félix Rhéaume.
