Death of Samba Mballo of the Gelongal group

Senegalese music is in mourning after the disappearance of Samba Mballo, better known as “Bathie”, member of the group Gelongal.

The artist, a true pillar of urban music in Senegal, has passed away, leaving a huge void in the country’s cultural landscape. The causes of his disappearance have not yet been officially communicated. The Gelongal group, founded in the 2000s, stood out for its committed lyrics and unique sounds, mixing hip-hop and traditional Senegalese rhythms. Samba Mballo was one of the emblematic figures, embodying an artistic movement which gradually established itself on the national music scene and beyond.
