Biden, Garland: the main culprits for the Democratic defeat

Winston Churchill wrote that “democracy” was “the worst form of government, except for all other” forms that have been tried.

We will measure the relevance of this reflection in the United States where we find ourselves after the election with a dangerous egocentric sociopath with full powers. If we have reached this point, it is above all the fault of the pathetic Joe Biden who appointed the no less pathetic Merrick Garland as attorney general of the United States.

Fool Garland let Trump’s January 6, 2021 coup attempt at the Capitol and his cover-up of secret files at his Mar-a-Lago estate go without legal consequences for nearly two years. He was afraid of doing anything that might resemble a partisan attack.

If Garland had acted, the trials would have long been over and Trump would be in jail, even with the former president’s legal delaying tactics. And he is reportedly in court on multiple other criminal charges.

Anyone other than Trump should have promptly answered for his crimes. By failing to act, Garland is responsible for what the United States will now become in the hands of an authoritarian megalomaniac, Supreme Court justices in his service, the neo-fascist GOP and armed militias at his command.

Trump: a serious threat

The Constitution and the American political system are no longer adapted to the vicissitudes of the 21st centurye century. A major rewriting of the founding texts of the republic would be necessary. I have written before that at this point in their history, some kind of confederation like the European Union could be a solution. But such a rebuilding of the American Republic is impossible in the foreseeable future. I doubt that the country will be able to avoid violent disruptions in the coming years.

The United States is in grave danger, whatever the commentators who try to minimize the threats that Trump represents.

Democrats must find a leader, both charismatic and determined, to stop Trump and the GOP from destroying democracy. I don’t currently see anyone who matches this profile. Rising star of the Democratic Party, California Governor Gavin Newsom will try his luck. Can he rise to the challenge and take on Republicans in the culture wars his party has already lost?

Garland: Biden’s big mistake

Democrats should never have let Joe Biden run given his declining mental health. He didn’t even remember the year his son died of cancer.

Even Joe Biden has finally had enough of Merrick Garland. His animosity was such that he wanted to get rid of it if he was re-elected. The Democrats got rid of him too late: it cost Harris the presidency.

Garland’s appointment was the biggest mistake of Biden’s presidency and, perhaps, American history. We’ll see soon enough!
