Surprise. The 2024 General Population and Housing Census (RGPH) has just revealed that Tangier has become the 2nd city in Morocco, ahead of Casablanca and followed by Fez and Marrakech.
The economic capital of the kingdom (Casablanca) retained its position as the most populated urban center with 3.23 million inhabitants, followed by Tangier (1.27 million), Fez (1.18 million), Marrakech (1.15 million), Salé (945,000), according to official figures published by the HCP at the start of the week.
The city of Meknes has 526,000 inhabitants, followed by the capital Rabat with 516,000 inhabitants, according to the same source.
The Casablanca region is still at the top of the ranking with 7.6 million inhabitants, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (5.1 million), Marrakech-Safi (4.8 million), Fez-Meknes (4.4 million), Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (4.3 million). Thus, the five regions are home to 71% of the Moroccan population.
Furthermore, population growth fell on average to 0.85% between 2014 and 2024, compared to 1.25 between 2004 and 2014. The number of Moroccan households increased by 26.82% to reach 9.27 million and the number foreign residents in the country increased by 71.8% to 148,152.
Note that the urban population has increased to 23.1 million, while the rural world only has 13.7 million inhabitants.
