In Punta Cana, the largest Club Med in the world hit by fire

A fire broke out early this Thursday morning in one of the most emblematic resorts of the French group. Sales will remain closed until November 1st.

On the morning of September 12, a fire broke out at the Club Med in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the largest in the world, as the trident group announced in a press release. Several common areas, a bar, one of the restaurants, a swimming pool, were damaged by the flames but no rooms were affected. No casualties are to be deplored and the time of the fire remains unknown for the moment.

«Thanks to the rapid and efficient intervention of the Club Med team on site and the local authorities, the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. No serious injuries were reported, but one guest was slightly injured during the evacuation and is receiving all necessary medical care,” specifies the Club Med press release. In order to ensure optimal comfort for vacationers on site, the resort teams offered them a transfer to the neighboring Club Michès Playa Esmeralda. Reservations for the Punta Cana destination were closed until November 1st.

Videos posted on social media, including Instagram, show a dense cloud of smoke billowing from the village in front of stunned holidaymakers. On Facebook, several aficionados posted emotional messages about their beloved Club this Friday. “A part of our “chalet in Punta Cana” went up in smoke last night… These are dozens of memories with our lovers, family and friends that will remain forever engraved in our memories at Cielo, Samana, the lobby, the theater… Club Med will roll up their sleeves quickly, that’s for sure, but it hurts this morning.”

One of the most emblematic Club Meds

Opened in 1981, this Club Med is surely one of the most emblematic of the trident brand, which helped make Punta Cana the destination it is today by financing, from the end of the 1970s, the construction of an airport. Today, it is also the largest Club Med in the world with a capacity of 613 rooms for 1,750 people, spread over 40 hectares. The village had undergone work a few months ago, in particular for the construction of a new place dedicated to weddings and other festive events for which the Club has the secret.

Our journalist Rémy Dessarts was able to stay there in March 2023.We are the largest and most comprehensive Club Med“, summed up Ugo Cigogna, the Italian village chief.
