Sharjah – Experts who participated in the development of the historical dictionary of the Arabic language, underlined the capital importance of this glossary given that it constitutes an achievement marking a qualitative leap in terms of documentation and preservation of the Arabic linguistic heritage in the benefit of current and future generations.
Speakers at a conference dedicated to announcing the finalization of the historical dictionary of the Arabic language, held Thursday as part of the 43rd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair, indicated that this project brought together 780 participants , distributed between editors, proofreaders, supervisors and administrators, from 20 Arab institutions including linguistic academies, universities and specialized centers, including Moroccan institutions.
On this occasion, they praised the efforts of the United Arab Emirates and the Emirate of Sharjah in carrying out this project by relying on new technologies to facilitate and accelerate the realization of this project.
In a speech for the occasion, the secretary general of the Arabic Language Academy and executive director of the historical dictionary project, Mohamed Safi Mostaghanemi, underlined the important role played by new technologies in the development of the dictionary as soon as possible, adding that this historical dictionary stands out compared to general dictionaries by its vocation to follow the evolution of words from their first use in ancient inscriptions and manuscripts until the modern era.
The member of the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Arabic Language Academy, Mohamed Hassan Khalaf, for his part, highlighted the importance of this unique, global and historical project, stressing that this dictionary represents a linguistic and civilizational for future generations, guaranteeing the Arabic language a preponderant place among the languages of the world.
The creation of the Arabic historical dictionary required seven years of work, after the issuance of a decree, on December 18, 2016, by His Highness the Emir of Sharjah, Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, establishing the Arabic Language Academy of Sharjah, with the aim of coordinating efforts towards the launch of the historical dictionary.
A meeting took place in Cairo on May 10, 2017, between the president and members of the Union of Arab Scientific and Linguistic Academies and the presidents of the Arabic language academies, leading to the formation of commissions and essential stages of implementation. implementation of the project.
The edition of the historical dictionary began on December 18, 2018, before the publication, in 2020, of eight empirical volumes and the initiation of editions until the announcement in September 2024, of the finalization of the edition of the 127 volumes of the dictionary.
