Cairo: closing of the 12th World Urban Forum

Cairo – The 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) closed on Friday in Cairo, with the participation of representatives from more than 180 countries, including Morocco.

This five-day Forum, initiated by the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), was an opportunity to renew UN-Habitat’s commitment to the adoption of sustainable solutions to meet the challenges of rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies.

In a press release published at the end of the closing, the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program, Anacláudia Rossbach welcomed the adoption of the Cairo Appeal which sets out the commitments of stakeholders for sustainable urban planning, calling for action to address urban planning challenges and promote large-scale collaboration and cooperation.

On this occasion, documents were prepared containing the conclusions and recommendations relating to the Forum, to respond to one of the most urgent problems currently facing the world.

The Kingdom of Morocco took part in this Forum with a delegation made up of representatives of several ministries, public institutions and elected bodies, in particular the ministries of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and Politics. of the City, Interior, Economy and Finance, the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion, the Al Omrane Group and urban agencies.

Placed under the theme “It all starts at home: local actions for sustainable cities and communities”, the World Urban Forum represents the second largest event organized by the United Nations after the climate conferences, due to the numerous activities and events that address various themes related to sustainable and inclusive urban development.

Forum participants examined several issues, including the global housing crisis, adaptation to climate change, sustainable financing, partnerships for local action and the role of technological innovation in transformation. of the future of cities.
