Evolution of basic salaries in the private sector

The basic hourly wage index1 for workers and employees (SHBOE) increased by 0.3% during the 3rd quarter of 2024 in companies with 10 or more employees in the private sector excluding agriculture, individual employers and extraterritorial activities (table 1 ). It grew by 0.3% in industry and the tertiary sector and by 0.2% in construction. Over one year, the SHBOE increases by 2.7% at the end of September 2024 after +3.0% at the end of June 2024.

The basic monthly salary index (SMB) for all employees increased by 0.3% during the 3rd quarter of 2024 (table 2). Over one year, it increased by 2.7% after +2.9% the previous quarter.

These developments must be compared to inflation: consumer prices (for all households2 and excluding tobacco) increase by 1.0% between the end of September 2023 and the end of September 2024 (graph 1). Over one year and in constant euros, the SHBOE and the SMB increased by 1.7%.

By sector of activity, the SMB grew during the 3rd quarter of 2024 by 0.4% in industry, by 0.3% in the tertiary sector and by 0.2% in construction (table 2). Over one year, it increased by 3.3% in industry, by 2.6% in the tertiary sector and by 2.5% in construction. In constant euros and over the same period, it increased by 2.3% in industry and by 1.6% in the tertiary sector and in construction (graph 2).

The SMB increased during the 3rd quarter of 2024 by 0.3% for all socio-professional categories (workers, employees, intermediate professions and managers) (table 3). Over one year, it increases respectively by 3.1%, 2.4%, 2.7% and 2.6% for each of these categories (workers, employees, intermediate professions and managers). In constant euros and over the same period, it increases by 2.1% for workers, by 1.4% for employees, by 1.7% for intermediate professions and by 1.6% for managers (graph 2 ).
