Donald Trump’s victory in this year’s presidential election could largely be explained by the Democratic clan’s inability to “get the vote out,” according to Philippe-Vincent Foisy.

During his comment on the show “Le Québec matin”, the political analyst notes that Donald Trump is on track to collect the same number of votes as in 2020 while his Democratic rival would receive nearly 10 million fewer than the 80 million of his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Donald Trump is going to be around 74% and Kamala Harris is not even going to make 70 million,” he said. There are 10 million Democratic voters who went to the polls last time to vote for Joe Biden, and who were not voted in this time. Maybe they voted for Trump, but still.”
“How come people didn’t come out to vote? he asks. How come Kamala Harris failed to get out the vote? I think that this figure is perhaps the one that speaks the most, where we have not succeeded.
According to him, the left in the United States seeks too much ideological perfection.
“We have a left today which, if you are not perfect, we will not vote for you,” he maintains. That was the problem with Mrs. Harris for many. I understand that it is not this or that it is not that, but if for you there are issues that are important, you still prefer it to be imperfect than it is the adversary, he seems to me.”
Democrats will therefore have to examine their conscience on this issue.
“Especially in the United States, the system is complicated and is not perfect. There are two tents. You are in one or the other or you look at the people at the campsite and you do not participate in the life of the campsite.
According to him, the left north of the American border should also have this reflection.
“In Canada, there are more tents, but these tents are imperfect,” he adds. Here, as in the United States, the conservatives have managed to put a lot of people in this tent. You have pro-abortionists, religious people, immigrants, people from the communities, white people, the rural vote, white women.
“Meanwhile, the left is tearing itself apart around the campfire over who is the most perfect enough to know who can possibly set foot in the tent,” he adds. So how do we attract more people to our tent? The Democrats will have to ask themselves this question, just like the left.
“Get back with your ex”
Philippe-Vincent Foisy also believes that many Americans idealize Donald Trump’s first term.
“I have the impression of seeing Americans returning to their ex,” he says. When you look at Joe Biden’s numbers [en 2020]they showed Donald Trump the door properly.”
“Afterwards there is a sort of nostalgia of saying to yourself “with my ex, it was easier, it was more fun, I didn’t have to do the dishes, the cleaning was perhaps done a little better” . There are plenty of things like that that you sometimes idealize afterwards. There may also be something that can explain [le résultat en 2024].»
The political analyst has a message for people who say they are disappointed with the result.
“Democracy is not just voting,” he insists. In Russia, there are elections, but it is not a democracy, because there is not all this civil society behind it. There are elections every 4 years, but in the meantime, get involved, get into the tent. If you want to move the tent, you have to do it from the inside.”
