The election of the Neuchâtel Council of State will be played out between two blocs on March 23. Wednesday evening in the assembly, the UDC largely accepted the principle of a right-wing alliance, as the PLR and Le Center did before it. The agrarian party also confirmed that its candidate would be the Chaux-de-Fonier municipal councilor Thierry Brechbühler. He will make a joint list with the PLR Crystel Graf, Laurent Favre (outgoing) and Quentin Di Meo, as well as the centrist Manon Freitag to face the left alliance bringing together the PS, Les Verts and the POP. The latter intends to take advantage of the resignation of PLR Alain Ribaux to regain the majority in the cantonal executive.
“It’s a historic day for the right of our canton,” underlines the president of the party, Niels Rosselet-Christ, in a press release. Until now, the bourgeois camp has never joined forces in this way for an election of the cantonal executive. Like the PLR last Saturday, which insisted on the fact that it was not an ideological marriage, the agrarian president clearly speaks of an alliance of circumstance: “The UDC remains the UDC. It’s not about being the “water carriers” of the PLR.”
