What world with Donald Trump? The French press is pessimistic about the billionaire’s “comeback”
The French press is worried on Thursday about Donald Trump’s victory against Democrat Kamala Harris and is trying to explain the reasons for this “comeback” described as “triumphant” of the American billionaire to the White House.

“Donald Trump was able to defy the predictions and come back from nowhere” writes Midi Libre, and American voters sent a “strong message” by giving unequivocal support to the businessman, notes Voix du Nord, like most of the editorials published Thursday.
But the leader’s return takes place in a world very different from eight years ago, when he took office for the first time, the editorialists point out.
His victory “seriously darkens the Ukrainian sky” notes La Voix du Nord, with the clouds it casts over the continuation of American military aid to this country to counter the Russian push.
It is “the end of an American cycle, that of a superpower open and engaged in the world”, which the future president “views through the sole prism of American national interests”, laments Le Monde.
The catalog of horrors: here is Donald Trump’s real program!
Mediapart is alarmed by the “victory of white supremacism in the United States” and “a climate of the end of the world”, pointing out the risks of repercussions, according to this online media, of Trump’s victory throughout the world: weakening of democracies, women and minorities, and reinforcement of the extreme right and dictators.
The spirit of “revenge” attributed to the future tenant of the White House is particularly worrying.
“We will quickly see if he seeks to reinvent himself to leave a mark on history or if his appetite for revenge is the strongest,” notes Le Figaro.
“America disoriented”
The victory of Donald Trump is also the defeat of a democratic camp which did not know how to speak to “a disoriented America”, notes Le Parisien.
“We must never look at the people with condescension or with arrogance, at the risk of waking up with a hangover,” emphasizes the daily.
Kamala Harris won none of the votes promised to her: neither the popular vote “which preferred a billionaire born with a silver spoon in his mouth”, nor the vote of women who “for many gave their vote to a man who embodies patriarchy”, nor that of minorities “even if Trump has made foreigners the cause of all American problems”, nor that of young people “who preferred a climate skeptic and conservative”, lists La Voix du Nord.
According to Le Monde, Libération and Midi Libre, Republican voters voted “with complete responsibility” and “in full conscience”.
Immigration, abortion, societal revolutions…: here are the subjects that changed the American election
“A vote for a convicted felon, misogynist, racist, self-centered, lying and probably deranged. Either the voters did not take these accusations seriously, or they were perfectly aware of them but they do not care,” argues Libération.
