Swiss army helicopter crashes in the canton of Obwalden

A Swiss army helicopter crashed on Wednesday evening in the town of Alpnachstad, which is part of the Obwalden municipality of Alpnach.

The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the lower station of the Pilatus railway, during the landing phase at the military airfield, according to the Obwalder Zeitung.

While the aircraft was returning from a training mission for the cantonal police of Graubünden, it hit the ground for reasons which have yet to be determined, according to the army spokesperson interviewed by the newspaper Central Switzerland.

More fear than harm

No one was injured in the accident, as the two pilots were able to escape the helicopter on their own. They received medical treatment on site, then were admitted to hospital for a check-up, the spokesperson added.

The aircraft, an EC635 model used in particular for the transport of troops and equipment, air rescue and emergency interventions in isolated regions, was damaged.

Military justice has opened an investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the crash.
