Nervous or hopeful, Florida Trumpists await the results and their champion

Between nervousness and hope, Donald Trump’s supporters in Florida are awaiting Tuesday evening the “most important result in the history of the country” as much as their champion, who must come and give a speech in front of them.

The billionaire, unsurprisingly, won Florida according to American media projections, but the results will continue to trickle in overnight.

“This election is so tense,” sighs Will Staten. At 18, the young man sees November 5, 2024 as “perhaps the most important day in the history of our country”. “Either our country stops or it starts thriving again for the next 100 years,” he adds, as the Palm Beach County Convention Center fills up.

In the room, men are in suits, women in evening dresses, a die-hard Donald Trump fan wears his hero’s name on a leather jacket. But whether smart or casual, many sport the Trumpists’ red “Make America Great Again” caps.

“Anything can happen. The polls say 17,000 different things. I don’t trust them. What happens, happens,” adds Will Staten. And faced with fate, “the only thing I can do is pray.”

Behind him, giant screens broadcast the news channels CNN, Fox News or MSNBC, which will give trends, then announce the winner, Donald Trump or Kamala Harris, state by state, before revealing the name of the next president of the United States. United. But the announcement of the results could extend beyond the evening.

At the convention center, which is subject to increased security measures, Jill Cohen, a 58-year-old supporter of Donald Trump, fears fraud by the Democrats, even if, as in 2020, there is no tangible evidence to support her claims.

“I’m afraid of people who don’t understand what’s at stake, like peace. President Trump is the most peaceful president we’ve ever had,” she says.

“If there is anyone who is going to stop all the wars and killings, it is President Trump, certainly not the people who are in power right now,” she adds.

– State of adoption –

Florida, a Republican stronghold in the southeast of the United States, has become the adopted state of Donald Trump, who has experienced numerous legal setbacks in his hometown of New York.

He owns a luxurious residence there, Mar-a-Lago, which is also a private club.

On election night, some are very optimistic.

“Donald Trump will win,” says Rocco Talarico, 68, wearing a “MAGA” cap and a leather vest emblazoned with the words “Born to Ride” and “Donald Trump.”

“We need this because our country has no borders anymore, our crime is bad, our stock market is bad, gas and food prices are high. Kamala (Harris) has done nothing for four years,” he said.

Mike McCormack, 50, is even more virulent, calling the Democratic candidate “possessed and manipulated.” Like his champion, he expresses doubts about the regularity of the vote.

“I have a little confidence in this election (but) not a lot,” he says.
