Who will move into the White House?
These pivotal states are decisive
The results in the swing states (pivotal states) are decisive for the election. In these states, both parties are equally strong, so sometimes it’s the Democrats who win, sometimes the Republicans. This year, it’s these seven states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina. They correspond to 93 of the 538 electoral college votes. A close race in these states can significantly delay the final election outcome. In the worst case, it may take several days before it is known.
A new parliament will also be elected
The House of Representatives is made up of 435 deputies elected every two years. Currently, the Republicans have the majority with 222 seats to 212 (one seat is vacant).
In the Senate, each state is represented by two senators. The total 100 senators (with a six-year term) are divided into three classes: two classes of 33 senators each and one class of 34. Every two years, one of these classes is renewed. In 2024, 34 seats are at stake (33 of the 1st class and a special election of the 2nd class). Heading into the election, Democrats hold a narrow majority of 51 seats, including four independent senators.
