Another death on our streets last night. An 11 year old child this time. I share my grief with his family, who are going through a terrible ordeal. Please drive carefully. Protecting the most vulnerable on the road is everyone’s business.

Autumn, a dangerous season for pedestrians

The months of October and November are particularly dangerous for pedestrians, underlines the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), which launched this customary warning in October on the occasion of Pedestrian Month.

From 2019 to 2023, in October and November, on average, 525 pedestrians are victims of bodily injury during a road accident and 16 of them unfortunately succumb to their injuries.

Changing weather conditions, high traffic, the time change and the darkness that sets in at the end of the afternoon are factors that increase accidents involving pedestrians.

Some reminders from the SAAQ

  • Pay attention and keep your eyes on the road.
  • Anticipate the presence of pedestrians on the road network.
  • Check your blind spots, especially those on the windshield.

Pedestrians :

  • Cross at intersections or pedestrian crossings, where available.
  • Obey pedestrian lights.
  • Check traffic and avoid distractions (headphones, cell phones) when crossing an intersection.
