In Spain, the far right takes advantage of anger after the disaster which left at least 212 dead

  • The disaster that ravaged the Valencian coast has already been taken over by far-right movements.

  • On Sunday, the population expressed their anger towards the authorities, particularly targeting King Felipe VI.

  • The main political force for denying climate change, Vox decided to abolish the Valencian Relief Unit in February.

This is one of the paradoxes of the tragedy that Spain is going through and particularly the Valencia region which mourns at least 212 victims and deplores dozens of missing people and colossal material damage. While denying the reality of climate change, the ultra right and many conspiratorial and anti-system activists are now taking advantage of the disaster it has caused, by taking over the anger and indignation of the Spaniards at the slow pace of climate change. relief and poor coordination between administrations.

“We feel abandoned, the State is far away and doesn’t care about our misfortune!” explained a resident to public radio RTVE. In fact, reinforcements arrived late to support the massive effort of volunteers literally equipped with shovels and buckets. Two administrations blame each other for this situation. The left-wing central government maintains that in accordance with the constitution, the regions have all the powers to provide relief in the face of a natural disaster. The right-wing Valencia region emphasizes that it is Madrid that must act immediately because it has all the levers to do so.
