Camille Cottin: “Adventure excites me but sometimes we pay the price”

After filming with Matt Damon and Lady Gaga, Camille Cottin returns to French cinema. The actress is starring in “Trois amis”, a female marivaudage about a trio of teacher friends, in theaters on November 6, 2024. The 45-year-old Frenchwoman also returns to the stage in “Le rendez-vous”, a crazy monologue that she will present across France from December. We met her at the Venice Film Festival where her film was in competition.

In “Three Friends”, your character does not like to take risks in love.

I don’t think Alice is afraid of taking risks. She doesn’t want to be a slave to her passion so she tries to control her feelings. I was able to relate to her because in my teens I was consumed with desire for someone who didn’t care about me and it lasted forever. I wanted to free myself from this influence and didn’t know how to do it.

Has your idea of ​​love or relationships changed with this film?

No. I am very committed to loyalty and integrity. I like that there is complexity and nuance in romantic relationships, that everything is not black and white. I think that the longer we are in a relationship, the more we are ready to accept things that we never imagined we would accept because we evolve in life. It’s nice to be a couple, but as everyone is different, you have to be flexible.

You don’t hesitate to take risks in your career, such as making films in English.

I love taking risks and often end up telling myself that I shouldn’t have! I am aware of the consequences of my choices, but I can’t help it. Adventure excites me, but sometimes we pay the price because we are not well equipped to go into unfamiliar territory.

After your English films, are you happy to return to safe ground?

I’m not on safe ground because I’m getting on the boards. The play is in French, but I am alone on stage and it terrifies me. “The Rendezvous” is adapted from “Jewish Cock”, a cult novel by German author Katharina Volckmer. This crazy monologue begins with a consultation with the doctor, where we discover that the heroine wishes to change sex and become a man.
