New Moroccan advances in the spotlight in Barcelona

LThe importance of the work of the team of Moroccan ophthalmic surgeons from Rabat (Pr. Mouhcine El Bakkali, Dr. Zakia Arabi and Dr. Siham Oudanane), who worked for years on the implementation of these technical innovations, lies in the ability of these new techniques to facilitate certain complex cataract surgeries while avoiding the complications of traditional surgery in certain groups of patients, we indicate in a recent press release.

Cataract surgery is “a simple surgery and gives excellent results thanks to the introduction of new technologies both diagnostically (imaging) and therapeutically (new implants, phako machines, operating microscope) available Moroccan ophthalmology which enjoys an excellent level equal to that of Europe,” adds the same source.

However, it seems that sometimes cataracts are diagnosed late, or associated with ocular morbidity such as pseudoexfoliation which makes the eye more fragile and surgery more complicated with poorer results.

This technical variant innovated by the Moroccan ophthalmological team makes it possible to avoid complications and make the duration of the intervention shorter and safer by avoiding maneuvers which weaken the eye.

Thus, these new techniques target an increasingly common pathology, given the aging of the population, to avoid complicated surgery that is more costly and less effective.

Remember that 30 million cataract operations are performed each year worldwide, and that 20,000 people regain their sight in Morocco thanks to these operations.
