Despite its nature as the conclusion of the trilogy, Venom 3 : The Last Dance has 2 post-credits scenes. And it's a shame…
Does the SSU (Sony's Spider-Man Universe) still have a future? So technically, yes, since Kraven the Hunter will be released in French theaters on December 18, 2024, but with Venom : The Last Danceit is possible that the franchise centered on the Spider-Man villains has lost its only goose that lays the golden eggs (the first two installments were box office successes, unlike Morbius et Madame Web).
Tom Hardy and director Kelly Marcel had stated very early on that The Last Dance would be the last opus of the trilogy, and moreover, Venom 3 canceled a scene from Spider-Man : No Way Home in order to close as many doors as possible, especially with the MCU. However, the issues of the feature film and its post-credits scenes would make us believe that a future is still possible (even if no one wants it). Explanations, with spoilers of course.
Venom 3, post-credits scene 1: it’s (K)null(l)
As a reminder, Venom 3 has as its distant antagonist Knull, king of darkness and creator of the symbiotes. After being betrayed by his own creation, he found himself imprisoned (meaning blocked on his throne by some sort of magical power). To free himself from it, he needs a codex, which the symbiotes generate after saving a host from death. As long as both entities are alive, the codex exists, and necessarily, Venom and Eddie Brock form a codex together.
This is why Knull sends xenophages, symbiote-eating creatures, to Earth with the aim of recovering the codex. All these beautiful people find themselves in Area 51, a place where all the symbiotes captured by humans for experimentation purposes are locked up. The xenophages arrive and eradicate a large part of the symbiotes still alive. Venom then decides to save Eddie, and sacrifices himself by taking away the xenophages to a vat of acid that was lucky enough to be nearby.
Despite this rather grim conclusion, Venom 3 still has two post-credits scenes. The first remonstrates Knull, who allows himself a sentient reply (“Your champion has fallen. The King in Black has awakened. Your world will burn, and you will watch.”) to promise his Thanos-style return. But now that the codex is destroyed, we wonder how he will be able to free himself from his prison.
Venom 3, post-credits scene 2: it sucks for other reasons
Finally, the second scene is mainly a (bad) joke. We see the bartender played by Cristo Fernández (In Spider-Man : No Way Home and at the beginning of The Last Dance) escape from the devastated Area 51. In the introduction to the film, he is taken away by Rex Strickland's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) teams to be interrogated. As he escapes from the base, we see a broken vial.
This is the one broken by Dr. Paine (Juno Temple) during the climax of the feature film, in order to release one of the last pieces of symbiote held by his scientific team, nicknamed Agony (not to joke about the quality of the film). Since Dr. Paine was struck by lightning during her youth, transforming with Agony grants her super-speed powers (because why not).
In the end, Agony is a priori the last symbiote still alive at the end of Venom 3and the post-credits scene seems to vaguely mark the character's possible return. A cockroach that passes near the vial is electrocuted, in reference to a sentence by Dr. Paine about the resistance of cockroaches even in the event of an apocalypse… There you go.
It's very light, and it all smacks of the ultimate nonsense of a saga that no longer even wants to make plans on the comet. We do post-credits scenes because we have to do them, even though no one is fooled anymore about the state of the SSU. And if you want to witness the catastrophe with your own eyes, Venom 3 is in cinemas since October 30.
