Future of Justin Trudeau: a decisive week for the Prime Minister

The week ahead could be decisive for the future of Justin Trudeau, given the context in which it begins and the key events that will take place during it.

The MPs will first return to the House of Commons following a week during which MPs worked in their respective constituencies rather than in Ottawa.

The Liberal Party caucus will then take place on Wednesday.

Mr. Trudeau will then try to rally his troops.

“If he wants to stay, Mr. Trudeau must buy time,” said political analyst Marc-André Leclerc. “He must use Wednesday’s meeting to try to calm everyone down and be able to think about a next step.”

“What will be difficult is that there is no vote,” he adds. Members “cannot hold a caucus to expel him.”

This week also begins in the context where a letter demanding the departure of the Prime Minister would have been signed by around twenty deputies, several media report.

Two Atlantic MPs have also said publicly that Justin Trudeau should leave office.

The last seven days have been difficult for the Prime Minister as four ministers in his cabinet announced that they would not run again in the next election, including Quebec Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, who will provide an update on his political future during a press conference on Monday.

Jean Chrétien’s former right-hand man, Eddie Goldenberg, also wrote a letter asking the leader of the Liberal Party to leave his post within two to three weeks.

Justin Trudeau has so far maintained that he is keen to run again in the next federal election.
